the great Khan and the army policemen

The great Khan was sitting peacefully below the lone Chinar tree, near his village, high up in the unknown mountains, higher than the clouds, with his dog and his donkey, smoking a tall chillum, happy and content with the serene valley that he could see below. The town and villages on the plains were too far away to be seen, and so, the great Khan was happy.

As was to be, his brother-in-law, whom he hated thoroughly, came up the narrow trail, with his donkey and accompanied by two army policemen riding the mountain mules. The great Khan cursed his brother-in-law thoroughly and more, for he favoured his bad tongue whenever his solitude was disturbed under the lone Chinar tree. The army policemen came up to the great Khan and with great authority in their voice, said, "We need to inspect the grounds behind your house for illegally grown opium."

The great Khan agreed, and added, "Okay, search the grounds behind my house, but do not go into that bush and grove on the edge of the grounds," and, he pointed the trees to the officers. The army policemen got very angry with the great Khan, and shouted, "Old man, we have been told all about you, and now, on the way up, we have been talking about you and discussing you with your kind and helpful brother-in-law. We know all about you. We have the authority of the National Government. The authority of the National Government is supreme everywhere. Even in your village."

The military policeman took out his identity card and showed it to the great Khan and shouted at him, loudly, "See... See this identity card? This identity card from the army says that I have the authority of the National Government. I can go anywhere I want. Anybody's property. Nobody can question me. Not even you, you old man of the mountains. We know all about you. You think you are clever? Now, we will go anywhere, search anywhere. Do you understand?"

The great Khan nodded peacefully, without getting up from his place under the Chinar tree, not disturbed, and said, "Go ahead. Do not tell me later that I did not warn you." The two military policemen went into the bushes and trees at the edge of the lands behind the great Khan's house. Inside, attending to certain duties, and disturbed by the presence of the two military policemen, came out the great Khan's wife and her mother, about her and the great Khan's feelings, the less said, the wiser.

They came rushing out, with their empty pots of water, and walking sticks, swinging over their heads, attacking the two army policemen. They were hitting the army policemen violently, and the two soldiers were clearly terrified. They screamed at the great Khan, "Tell them to stop! Tell them to stop!"

The great Khan was not disturbed. His dog and his donkey were also peaceful and content, happy, lying under the lone Chinar tree. Smoking his chillum, and smiling at his brother-in-law, whom he hated absolutely, the great Khan said, "Your identity card! Show them your identity cards and tell them about the authority of the National Government!!!"
